TATUNG ANNOUNCES NEW FAMILY
OF HIGH PERFORMANCE DUAL 64-BIT AMD OPTERON™ PROCESSOR-BASED SERVERS
FOR RACKMOUNT ENVIRONMENTS
Fremont, CA – Feb 9th,
2004 – Tatung Science & Technology, Inc. (TSTI®),
is introducing a new family of 64-bit rackmount servers (TS-1881)
featuring dual AMD Opteron™ processors in a 1U (1.75 inch) rack
mounted form factor. The new Tatung servers target high performance
computer users, for applications in the life sciences, nanotechnology,
Web-based and E-commerce servers, Internet game servers, and clustering
environments. Two models, both 1U form factor systems, support up to
two AMD Opteron processors, featuring 1M Byte of level 2 cache and an
integrated memory controller. Supporting a variety of high performance
peripheral device options, including Linux or Windows operating systems,
the new Tatung servers allow seamless migration from 32 to 64-bit server
technology and the ability to run both 32 and 64-bit applications simultaneously.
“Tatung’s new family of AMD Opteron-processor based servers
offers compelling performance benefits to high performance computing
customers, while conserving space and reducing power requirements in
data centers,” said Ben Williams, director of the Server/Workstation
Business Segment at AMD. “The new Tatung servers are designed
to allow customers to get the most out of their 32-bit applications
while ensuring seamless, predictable performance when moving applications
to 64-bit platforms.”
Space-Saving Rack-Optimized
IU Form Factor
The model TS-1881-K01 and TS-1881-K02 are both 1U systems, requiring
the least amount of rackmount space without compromising performance
or expandability of components. Each of these systems includes dual
AMD Opteron processors with 1MByte of level 2 cache and an integrated
memory controller. Both models feature 411 watt power supplies and support
for two 3.5 inch hard disk drives. The TS-1881-K01 supports up to 16
GB of ECC DDR memory and two hot swap SCSI disk drives; a Slim CD-ROM
drive; two PCI expansion slots; dual gigabit Ethernet; and RAID support.
The TS-1881-K02 features up to 16GB of ECC DDR memory and two ATA disk
drives; a slim CD-ROM drive; dual gigabit Ethernet; and two PCI expansion
slots. Both systems offer optional IPMI 1.5 management modules. Both
systems can support 32-bit and 64-bit applications running on Windows
or Linux operating systems.
Servers Take Advantage of the
AMD Opteron Processor’s Advanced Features
The AMD Opteron processor architecture provides enhancements that deliver
world-class performance in single and dual processor applications, such
as those employed in the Tatung servers. These features include an integrated
memory controller and 1MB of L2 cache. Additionally, HyperTransport™
technology provides a scalable bandwidth interconnect between processors,
I/O subsystems, and other chipsets. It supports up to three HyperTransport
links, providing up to 19.2GB/s peak bandwidth per processor. The AMD
Opteron processors also include 64-bit wide key data and address paths
that incorporate a 48-bit virtual address space and a 40-bit physical
address space, allowing end users to run their existing installed base
of 32-bit applications and operating systems at peak performance, while
providing a migration path that is 64-bit capable.
“This new processor allows Tatung to provide data center and other
high performance computing users to realize a significant advancement
in compatibility, performance, investment protection, and reduced total
cost of ownership (TCO),” said Dr. Kam Chan, president of Tatung
Science and Technology.
